The Covid-19 pandemic is affecting Brazil immensely right now. The infection curve is climbing fast, and many fear that the number of unrecorded cases is high. The society is locked down, as it is in the rest of the world.
Children at Risk Foundation (CARF) is a Scandinavian foundation which works preventively amongst youngsters in the slum areas in the periphery of São Paulo. Right now the situation is critical for the children in these ‘favelas’. The three centers of CARF in Brazil are presently closed, as are other schools and other entities offering social benefits for children. The majority of the adults have been laid off, and have lost their incomes. They have no savings to fall back on, in the favelas people normally survive from day to day. When the incomes fails, the purse is empty. The situation is critical for the families with children, they currently don’t have money to buy food. Their plight is desperate.
The food basket initiative
CARF-Brazil´s managing director Ivone Silva has responded by setting up a food basket initiative in the favelas in the neighborhood. They buys staple foods and cleaning/hygienic articles and wraps them in appropriate boxes, which is then transported to needy families as well as the elderly.

The food baskets contain, amongst other food stuffs; rice, beans, cooking oil, sardines, canned mixed vegetables, powdered milk, coffee and different common flour types. Some cocoa powder, cream biscuits and jelly powder is included for the kids. In addition, hygiene- and cleaning supplies and disinfectants are supplied.
They considers that a basket should last 3-4 weeks for a family of five people.

Food basket aid
The cost per basket is the equivalent of 30 USD.
