About
streetkids
In
all big cities of the South, there are streetkids, but
the attention has particularly been drawn to streetkids
in Brazil. One of the reasons is perhaps the incredible
brutality and indifference Brazilian officials are treating
them.
In
the São Paulo area only, where CARF works, official
estimations show that there are about 15.000 kids living
on the street. The estimations is probably ridiculusly
low, and goes to show how little the country is doing
to deal with the problem. The extent of the problem is
probably far greater than what we can imagine.

Support CARF
CARF does not receive any
financial support from the government and
is therefore both dependent on, and based
on groups and individuals doing volunteer
work. In order to succeed in this various

CARF's
vision and purpose
CARF
is a foundation dedicated to helping street kids. The
problem of street kids is a global problem, but especially
associated with big cities in the South. However, street
kids represent an increasing problem also for cities in
the North.
Street
kids are related to poverty and the culture flourishes
in societies with poor public social structure. Any hope
for care and consideration is absent in the fight for
survival and the kids grow up in a culture of violence,
crime and drug abuse.

Nowadays,
it is usually displayed in the academies or on some occations
in public areas. Placed in a circle, the dancers sing and
clap their hands to the music, emphasising the importance
of music in capoeira.

The
story about
Gregory J. Smith og CARF |
|
In
1971 the British exchange student Gregory John Smith
came to Norway. The trip turned out to be more than
just an exchange as Smith decided to stay. 21 years
later his life would yet again take a different turn.
Smith
had an idealistic dream about using his resources
and great capacity to help children in another part
of the world.
His
dream eventually brought him to the biggest city in
Brazil, São Paulo. 6. November 1992 Children
At Risk Foundation - CARF - was founded. In order
to secure enough initial capital, he sold his house,
a left-behind school building outside Bergen, which
he earlier had refurbished in an impressive manner.
