Ethical guidelines

Children At Risk has developed a set of ethical guidelines for employees and volunteers.

Kolibri-Children At Risk Foundation (CARF)

Code of Conduct

KolibriCARF’s rules of conduct are intended to help employees and officers to make ethical decisions in their work and personal life when they represent KolibriCARF. The rules of conduct are an addition to and apply in conjunction with KolibriCARF’s ethical guidelines.

All employees and officers of KolibriCARF’s service must establish relationships and work towards strengthening confidence in the organization. The employees and representatives shall appear as good representatives of KolibriCARF’s values and objectives.

All employees and officers must be aware that violations of KolibriCARF’s rules of conduct can have serious and negative consequences for the people KolibriCARF work with.

The rules are binding to the employees and officers when they act as representatives of KolibriCARF. When traveling as a representative of KolibriCARF, the rules also apply for any leisure activities.

All employees and representatives, including consultants, have an important role and responsibility to implement and monitor KolibriCARF’s rules of conduct, and must commit to following the rules by signing them.

In the case of doubt or uncertainty as to whether an action or situation is a violation, or in special situations where there is the opinion that an exception should be made, the matter shall be discussed with the management (the CEO or Chairman) at the first opportunity for clarification and possible approval.

Violation of rules of conduct may have contractual implications for the employees concerned. The employee may be given written or verbal warning, the employee's job description or position can be changed, or the employee can resign or be dismissed, depending upon the severity of the case and their intention to resolve the matter.

COMMITMENT TO FOLLOW RULES OF CONDUCT

(Code of Conduct)

KolibriCARF’s vision is a world where everyone has access to education on their own terms, where no groups or individuals are marginalized, and everyone has influence over their actual social and personal situation.

In KolibriCARF we encounter many different challenges and work situations. All KolibriCARF’s employees and officers, regardless of employment, have a personal responsibility for their own behaviour to be consistent with KolibriCARF’s vision and purpose.

As a representative of KolibriCARF I will promote KolibriCARF’s vision by contributing through my work to the political, civil, economic, social and cultural liberation of the southern hemisphere.

As a representative of KolibriCARF I will respect and promote fundamental human rights and social justice, including equal rights for both sexes.

As a representative of KolibriCARF I will therefore act in accordance with all of KolibriCARF’s instructions and directives, including ethical guidelines and KolibriCARF’s rules of conduct.

1. Behavior as a representative of KolibriCARF

I will follow local laws and regulations. This includes dressing in a way that is appropriate for the assignment.

I will endeavor to show respect for religious beliefs, customs of local cultures and try to avoid behavior that is not acceptable within a given culture.

In cases where a tradition, custom or national law cuts across standards set by the UN International Human Rights, I will follow the standard set by the UN's Human Rights.

I am aware of, and take into account, that as a KolibriCARF representative I may be in a powerful situation relating to our partners, those who receive the aid. I will not in any way abuse such a situation.

2. Private interests

I will follow the principle of professional case management and distinguish between private and work-related conditions and commitments.

I will not have commercial or other personal financial interests or activities in the countries where I act as a representative of KolibriCARF.

If in doubt, I will inform and obtain prior approval of the overall management of KolibriCARF.

I will be completely unconnected from any financial fraud at KolibriCARF, or KolibriCARF’s cooperation organizations.

3. Corruption

As a representative of KolibriCARF I will not give or receive money, gifts or other benefits to / from a manager, agent or employee of a contributor, partner, supplier, customer, government agency or any other institution that KolibriCARF has a relationship with.

In countries where gifts are used as an expression of respect or gratitude related to their customs or etiquette exceptions can be made. In such cases, I must report to the general manager and, if possible, get pre-approval.

All the gifts I receive from anyone other than KolibriCARF, as the representative or employee of KolibriCARF, I will report to the CEO at the earliest opportunity.

4. Security

As a representative of KolibriCARF I will not act in a way that may put myself, or others, in danger.

My general manager should be informed about where I am on assignment or on business travel. Local leave / free must be authorized in advance.

I will refrain from the use of illegal substances. I will exercise caution in dealing with alcohol and other intoxicating substances. This applies also in my spare time while I am on a mission or service trip.

5. Sexual relations

The purchase of sexual services involves the exploitation of people, and in particular adds to the vulnerability of women and children. The same applies to the acceptance of sexual services in situations of economic and power imbalances.

As a representative of KolibriCARF in Norway, as well as the rest of the world, I will refrain from buying sexual services. Sexual intercourse with children under 18 is not allowed.

I will not use the organization's computers or other technical equipment to view, download or distribute inappropriate material such as pornography.

6. Confidentiality

As a representative of KolibriCARF I undertake to treat with care all the information I have knowledge of in connection with work-related travel.

I am aware that in my work I will be privy to information regarding the circumstances and interests of individuals, institutions, public bodies or other interests which must not be made available to others. The duty of confidentiality also applies after I have left the service of KolibriCARF.

__________________________

I confirm that I have read and understood KolibriCARF’s rules of conduct and recognize that if I act contrary to these, it may affect my employment.
